About Allison Transmission
Allison Transmission was formed in 1909 when James A. Allison and three partners worked together to build the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. After developing and funding the first Indianapolis 500 race and racing teams, Allison went on to manufacture race car and automotive technologies. During the first World War, the company focused on products for the war effort, including airplane engines. In 1928, the company was sold to General Motors and then continued their focus on aviation and aircraft engines. After the end of World War II, however, Allison Transmission solely began to focus on civilian transportation and developed automatic transmissions for heavy-duty vehicles.
